The castle is owned by the Burgdorf Castle foundation (Stiftung Schloss Burgdorf). The canton of Bern handed the castle over to the foundation on 1 October 2017, along with all the benefits and burdens that came with it. The foundation’s aim is to maintain Burgdorf Castle as a valuable monument of national significance for future generations, and to make its cultural and other uses accessible to the general public and private individuals. Its goal is to enable visitors to experience the history of the castle first-hand. All of the foundation’s profits and capital are dedicated to this purpose.
Construction began on the castle renovation project on 21 June 2018
