Access and parking
It is possible to reach the castle by public transport from Burgdorf train station (bus 461 as far as the “Kronenplatz” stop. The castle is situated 200m from the bus stop. The road is paved with a 16% incline. If you register the day before, a shuttle service from Kronenplatz to the castle can be offered to people with reduced mobility (telephone 034 426 10 20, unfortunately not possible for electric wheelchairs).
For people with reduced mobility, we recommend taking the car. Contact the youth hostel in advance, and you will be permitted to drive as far as the castle courtyard.
The youth hostel has a paid parking spot adapted for people with reduced mobility. Please reserve in advance. For those with disabilities holding a blue parking badge, parking is free.
Reduced admission
Visitors with disabilities pay reduced AI admission. An accompanying person enters free of charge. Burgdorf Castle Museum accepts the Kulturlegi/CarteCulture.
Wheelchair accessible toilets
On the ground floor of the hostel building (accessible via a ramp) and on the first floor of the Loft (accessed by lift from the main entrance) you will find toilets adapted for those with reduced mobility.
Overview of the accessibility and equipment of the rooms
The museum comprises over 30 rooms with different conditions. A compilation on the equipment and accessibility of the individual rooms can be found in the PDF document Tour Information (in German).
Accessibility and offers for those with reduced mobility
The youth hostel has a lift accessible by wheelchair leading to the different floors. The doors of the rooms are 80cm wide. A double room has bathroom fixtures that are completely wheelchair accessible.
The museum is partially accessible for those with reduced mobility. The main floor with 12 rooms (including the shields room) can be reached by a wheelchair friendly lift or by a stairlift. The door width of the rooms is at least 80 cm (for one room 77.5 cm). You can obtain the badge and the key for the lift and stairlift at the reception.
The keep, the walkway, the tower above the entrance as well as the 2nd, 3rd and 4th floors of the dwelling (where you’ll find the Knights’ Room and the chapel) are only accessible by steep stairs and are therefore not adapted for those with reduced mobility. In virtually every other room of the museum you will find seats.
The restaurant, as well as events taking place in the Assizes Room, in the Great Corridor or in the Shields Room are accessible by wheelchair. Events in the Knights’ Room, however, are not accessible by wheelchair.
Accessibility and offers for the visually impaired
Guide dogs are welcome in the Burgdorf Castle Museum and in the youth hostel.
The museum does not have tactile orientation points for the visually impaired. The ground and staircases are not always level and certain display cases are suspended which the white cane cannot detect. We recommend that you be accompanied on your visit to the museum.
All the texts as well as notices relating to the museum artefacts can be found on the museum website. They can be enlarged or listened to on your personal device.
Accessibility and offers for people with hearing impairments
Each museum exhibition is accompanied by written texts. Auditory elements of the exhibitions (available in German only) can be downloaded from our website and you can listen to them on your personal device, enabling you to adjust the volume to suit.
Accessibility and services for people with autism spectrum disorders
The number of visitors to the museum varies. For a visit in a quiet time slot, we recommend the weekdays Monday to Thursday 10.00-16.00. The museum offers a wide range of sensory experiences. In winter, the museum has greater temperature fluctuations. To prepare your visit, you will find detailed information in the PDF document Tour Information (in German).
