Memories of my father, the railroad worker
“The red miniature train of the Emmental-Burgdorf-Thun-Bahn reminds me of my childhood.” says Trudi Aeschlimann-Müller, born 1942. “My father, a passionate handyman, worked for SBB in Burgdorf station, which was then in poor condition. He longed for a more modern station and he built a large plywood model of his dream building. We children could use this model as a doll’s house.
In 1957, the new Burgdorf station was finally finished. At the counters, printers stamped destinations directly onto cardboard tickets. Even the newsreels reported this wonderful technological innovation and I made a presentation about it at school.
Sometimes perishable goods or damaged packages were left at the station and so, from time to time, a cake found its way onto our table. Once, the father brought home a package full of cotton baby clothes. He wanted to use their lint-free fabric as cloths for his DIY and photography workshop, much to my mother’s dismay!”
